On Monday, April 6th, 2026, Sétif 1 University Ferhat Abbas launched the first international workshop on the breeding and use of laboratory animals, as well as the protection of the Barbary macaque.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Mohamed El Hadi Latreche, in the presence of local authorities, university officials, national and international researchers, and socio-economic partners.
This workshop is part of a national project aimed at establishing three specialized centers for breeding the Barbary macaque, with the goal of enhancing health security and preserving this species. It brings together participants from several countries and features scientific sessions and workshops addressing key topics such as macaque management and conservation, its use in biomedical research, and ethical considerations in animal experimentation.
The discussions also highlight the role of animal models in medical sciences, colony management and reproduction strategies, as well as innovative scientific applications in this field.
